The Isle of Wight.

Situated off the south coast of England, separated from ‘the mainland’ by as little as 3 miles of water, the Isle of Wight attracts approximately 2.7 million visitors each year. This secluded destination- accessible only by ferry- is fittingly known as 'The Garden Isle.'

In total, the resident population is just 140,000, with the eastern side of the island being more populated than the west. The Island measures just 52 miles around, with the town of Newport as it's capital.

Despite its size, the Isle of Wight has a wide variety of features and attractions. A ridge of chalk downland stretches the breadth of the Island from the Needles in the west to Bembridge in the east. The slopes of this great backbone support many of the picturesque villages and small towns- each with its own distinctive traits that contribute to making the Isle of Wight such a unique place to live and visit.

So how do you get there? Approximately 2 ½ hours from London, there are different routes to choose from. Fast catamarans or the hovercraft cater for day trippers without vehicles. But if you’d prefer a more leisurely cruise and want to bring your car, then choose one of the following vehicle ferry crossings; Lymington-Yarmouth, Portsmouth-Fishbourne, or Southampton-East Cowes.

With departures from the naval dockyard of Portsmouth you can see the warships and historic ships, or from the busy port of Southampton you can view the massive container ships and luxury cruise liners. If you'd prefer something more picturesque, the town of Lymington boasts magnificent views of the western Solent and famous Needles rocks and lighthouse.
Why the Isle of Wight for holidays? With the increased fuel charges and taxes that are being applied to flying, holidaying in our own country is becoming increasingly popular. It makes sense- and what better destination than a place that can cater for everyone.

The island has a summer full of top events, such as the Isle of Wight festival in June and the Bestival in September. These festivals boast many top names in the music world and attract a national and international audience!  May hosts the increasingly popular Isle of Wight Walking Festival, which has walks for all age groups and abilities. Furthermore, the world-famous yachting event “Cowes Week” is held at the beginning of August, which again attracts people from all around the world!

There is a vast choice of accommodation on the Island, from hotels and bed and breakfasts through to camping and touring parks. This complements a broad spectrum of activities  and past-times to suit the whole family, such as English pubs, restaurants, walking, cycling, horse riding, sailing, paragliding, swimming, surfing, fishing, fossil hunting, castles & museums, adventure parks, country fairs, craft villages, bird-watching and red squirrels to name but a few! There really is something here for everyone, and the more 'relaxed' pace of life is an additional bonus to be enjoyed.

The Isle of Wight is stooped in history with tales of smuggling and skulduggery. Museums of dinosaur remains and smuggling are open for all. In such a small area there is such a variety of beauty and intrigue, activity and relaxation, a place buzzing with fun, yet peace and tranquillity too.

While the island boasts so many major events and attractions, there is also plenty of opportunity to get away from the crowds, with some five hundred miles of footpaths, stunning scenery, downlands and woodlands- not to mention the wildlife. Tourist beaches may be popular but there are also a fantastic selection of rugged and secluded coves and beaches to be discovered under windswept headlands.
